Foaming shower washes are a growing trend in Europe, with more products emerging in the beauty market over the past year. Initially we were introduced to foam face cleansers and then foam body washes started to appear, mainly from high-end luxury brands such as Rituals, Clarins and Diptyque. With an evident trend surfacing, these washes have now hit the high street, with Imperial Leather and Nivea leading the way by developing their own.
What are the benefits of a foam shower wash?
Unlike a shower gel, foam washes don’t require any lathering with a sponge so they’re actually easier to apply to the skin as you don’t have to wait as long for the product to absorb. I always find that unless I use a sponge or loofah, I end up losing a lot of a shower gel when it slides off of my body while I’m trying to lather it up. Plus, a pump action dispenser makes it a lot easier to get all of the product out of the bottle. I definitely think that a little bit of shower foam goes a lot further than the same amount of gel – the product spreads over my body a lot more easily and it leaves my skin feeling noticeably softer, as it’s been properly cleansed.
I’ve tested out a couple of brands to review their performance and it just so happens that one is a high street brand and the other is a luxury brand. Read on to find out whether it’s actually worth spending that little bit extra…
Nivea Luxurious Shower Silk Mousse (Rhubarb Raspberry), 200ml /£2.50
This week I arrived home to a package from the Glamour Beauty Club with my full sized sample of the new Rhubarb Raspberry Nivea Shower Silk Mousse inside. Excited to try the product I jumped straight in the shower for a test-run!
My first impression was that I was surprised at how heavy the bottle felt. I’m hoping that it means that there’s lots of foam inside so I’ll get plenty of washes out of it, but it’s hard to tell when you can’t see the actual contents inside (I’ll have to update you on how long it lasts me). I found that the mousse itself has a nice thick consistency, it’s a lot more dense than a foam wash. The consistency made it incredibly easy to apply and it felt like a little of the foam went a long way to creating the perfect frothy shower experience. My skin felt truly cleansed!
Dermatologically confirmed as pH-skin balanced, Nivea’s Silk Mousse is designed to be very gentle on the skin. I’ve got quite sensitive skin and it wasn’t irritating at all. The mousse also contains silk extract, a water-soluble extract of raw silk known to provide moisturising properties, so your skin is guaranteed to feel silky smooth after use.
Nivea’s Silk Mousse has a sweet, floral rhubarb and raspberry scent – it’s delicate, not overly fruity and my shower smelt amazing whilst I was using it! The only downside is that I didn’t find the scent long-lasting after application as it seemed to wear off my body quite quickly.
Overall I really like this product and the thick consistency of the mousse has to be the highlight for me. Nothing beats one, but the frothy foam made a great substitute for a bubble bath!
The Ritual of Sakura, Sensational Foaming Shower Gel, 50ml/ £4.50 (200ml/£8.50)
I absolutely adore this brand! Rituals places its values in helping customers to ‘find happiness in the smallest of things’. The idea behind each of the products is that they allow the user to appreciate moments of relaxation, such as a long bath or create a comforting atmosphere in the home. Each product range is inspired by an eastern ritual or tradition. The Ritual of Sakura collection is based on the Japanese celebration of the annual flowering of the Cherry Blossom (the Sakura). The flowering of the blossom marks ‘an awakening of nature and symbolises that beauty is momentary and life must be enjoyed’.
I picked up the Sensational Foaming Shower Gel as part of a gift set that I received at Christmas – The Ritual of Sakura, Relaxing Treat (£19.50). The gift set includes a gorgeous selection of Rituals minis, including a foaming shower gel, shower oil, body scrub and body cream. (Blog post on this gift set coming soon!) You can, however, get your hands on the travel size 50ml foaming shower gel separately to test it out, before investing in the 200ml full size bottle.
My favourite part about this product has to be the fragrance! Cherry blossom and rice milk are such a rich, sweet-smelling combination:
RICE MILK: Throughout Asia, rice is a symbol of abundance, happiness and fertility. The essence of rice milk makes your skin soft, and supple and gives it a healthy glow.
CHERRY BLOSSOM: The fragile blossoms of the sakura tree (Japanese cherry) is often described as spring snow by Japanese poets. For the Japanese cherry blossoms symbolise the rebirth of nature and purity since ancient times. The delicate fragrance is wonderfully relaxing.
Compared to Nivea’s mousse, the fragrance of the Sakura shower foam is a lot stronger with bold cherry notes coming through. The smell lasted for hours afterwards both in my bathroom and on my skin, which I was really impressed by. (Tip: Using The Ritual of Sakura Body Cream after showing with the foam will make the fragrance last on your body even longer).
The formula of this shower foam is very different (but still just as fun) to Nivea’s mousse as it comes out first as a gel. Once massaged into the skin, the gel then turns into a rich, creamy, moisturising foam. Lathering up the foam onto your skin leaves it feeling intensely hydrated and supple. Again, I didn’t experience any negative side effects on my sensitive skin, just a fresh, cleansed feeling, which means that the paraben-free mineral oil contained in the wash worked it’s magic!
The amount of product in the bottle is hard for me to judge, as I have the 50ml travel-sized version. However Rituals boasts that the full 200ml should provide you with at least 50 washes.
Overall I love this product. The long-lasting cherry scent makes you feel like you’ve just stepped out of a spa, fully pampered! Although the consistency of the foam isn’t as dense as Nivea’s mousse, it’s still just as fun to use and easy to apply. The only downside to this product is the price. At £8.50 for 200ml, this is a lot more money than I’d usually spent on a shower product that I’d use every day. However, as a treat to myself, I’d definitely buy Rituals shower foam again when I’m feeling a bit more indulgent.
So, why do foam washes feel so much better than shower gels?
According to Allure, shower foams ‘evoke the sensation of being pampered—in the shower’. Cosmetic chemist Ginger King explains that the ‘dense, creamy foams give a sensorial experience. Foams denote feelings of luxury, and it’s that experience that make consumers crave for more and repeat the purchase.’ So really it’s like taking a bubble bath in the shower! As I don’t own a bath, but have a shower instead, it’s important for me to find something that can make washing a more pleasurable, pampering experience. As Rituals expresses, it’s important to appreciate small moments of relaxation, and it looks like foams and mousses are a great start to perfecting this in the shower!
What do you prefer? Shower foams or shower gels?
